I.i Egeus demands Hermia marry Demetrius, so she plans to flee with Lysander.
Helena: “I will go tell him of fair Hermia’s flight: Then to the wood will he tomorrow night Pursue her;” (246-247)
I.ii Quince gives play parts for Theseus’ wedding day play.
Quince: “Marry, our play is ‘The most lamentable comedy and most cruel death of Pyramus and Thisbe.’” (11-12)
II.i Oberon wants to put flower juice in Titania and Demetrius’ eyes.
Oberon: “And with the juice of this I’ll streak her eyes, And make her full of hateful fantasies. Take thou some of it, and seek through this grove: A sweet Athenian lady is in love With a disdainful youth: anoint his eyes; But do it when the next thing he espies May be the lady:” (257-263)
II.ii Puck anoints Lysander mistakenly, who now loves Helena, not Hermia.
Lysander: “Content with Hermia? No! I do repent The tedious minutes I with her have spent. Not Hermia but Helena I love.” (117-119)
III.i Titania awakes and loves Bottom, who has a donkey’s head.
Titania: “And I do love thee. Therefore, go with me.” (150)
III.ii Anointed, Demetrius and Lysander love Helena, angering Hermia, causing fights.
Puck: “When you wak’st, Thou tak’st True delight In the sight Of thy former lady’s eye:” (453-457)
IV.i Titania’s spell’s gone; the disputers found and allowed marriage respectively.
Theseus: “Egeus, I will overbear your will; For in the temple, by and by with us These couples shall eternally be knit.” (178-180)
IV.ii Unfound, Bottom’s arrival brings survival of the play and joy.
Bottom: “And, most dear actors, eat no onions not garlic, for we are to utter sweet breath; and I do not doubt but to hear them say it is a sweet comedy.” (39-42)
V.i The play ensues, and Puck assures life’s amendments by his kind.
Puck: “If we shadows have offended, This but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumbered here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, Not more yielding but a dream Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend.” (418-425)
